DAY 6 – Leo in Summer Is a Liability

DAY 6 – Leo in Summer Is a Liability

If you live with a Chow Chow, you already know summer is not their season.

That thick double coat that makes them look like a majestic lion in winter turns into a built in parka once the temperature rises. Leo, our resident fluff bear, overheats dramatically. Short walk. Mild sunshine. Instant panting machine.

Chow Chows were not designed for summer heat. According to the American Kennel Club, their dense coat and compact face structure can make them more sensitive to high temperatures compared to short haired breeds.

So we had to get creative.

Why Chow Chows Are Prone to Overheating

Chow Chows have:

• A thick double coat that traps heat
• A stocky build
• A shorter muzzle that can make cooling less efficient

When dogs overheat, they lose fluids fast. Hydration becomes everything.

The Simple Dog Hydration Trick That Changed Our Summer

I make homemade vegetable broth using Krunchmates single ingredient dehydrated vegetables.

That is it. Just vegetables. No salt. No sugar. No additives.

Here is how it works:

  1. Add Krunchmates dehydrated vegetables to hot water

  2. Let them steep until you have a light vegetable broth

  3. Strain if needed

  4. Pour into ice cube trays

  5. Freeze

Cold cube. Happy fluff bear.

These vegetable broth ice cubes for dogs are an easy way to increase hydration during hot weather. Leo treats them like a snack. I treat them like summer insurance.
